ARTIK 2 EN C
The ARTIK 2 paraglider is the newest release from Niviuk Paragliders. Borrowing design breakthroughs from the Niviuk Icepeak 3 competition glider, the Artik 2 maintains the sweet handling of the original ARTIK, with even more performance. In sizes 25 and 27 the ARTIK 2 gets an EN rating of C (think DHV 2), but only one C in 24 categories, the rest are A and B ratings. The ARTIK 2 will be THE EN C rated glider for 2009. Cross Country Magazine reviewers wrote “the Artik 2 has that lovely bite into thermals that I really appreciate,” and “It’s coordination in thermals makes the Artik2 stand out amongst wings of its genre.” They concluded “The combination of agile handling, pitch positive thermalling, good feedback and excellent performance for the class make the Artik 2 a great wing for experienced pilots looking for kilometers and fun without wobbles and worries.”

Niviuk Paraglider Artik 2
The ARTIK 2 is not simply an update or revamp of the original Artik. The team here at Niviuk wanted to produce a completely new EN C class glider whilst ensuring the unique Niviuk qualities found in all our wings were maintained. Using our very latest CAD design technology, as used in the development of the Icepeak 3 and after two years of development work with many prototypes, we now have pleasure in bringing you the ARTIK 2.
The leading edge of the ARTIK 2 is very similar to the ones used on our competition gliders and not only provides solid stability at high speed but also one which is more robust and more suited to the elements endured by this section of the glider. The very simple yet efficient 3-riser system, combined with a highly effective and efficient line plan allows for ease of pre-flight checking and ultimately higher glider speed.
The outstanding qualities of the ARTIK 2 are:
- Ease of flight
- Efficiency in climbs
- High safety
With these qualities you will find the ARTIK 2 will quickly become the EN C wing wanted by many around the world.

Pilots Comment on ARTIK 2
“I’ve had an Artik2 for about 2 weeks now and have 3 flights in the mountains and did an SIV/maneuvers course last week. I’m about 105 kg all up on a medium Artik2. I had a Niviuk Hook for several years, and the first Artik for a bit less than a year. Real briefly, I loved the Hook, liked the original Artik and LOVE the Artik2.
First, in flight I noticed several differences from the Artik. The Artik 2 feels even more solid in turbulent air. My very first day on it other pilots commented after the flight that the day was one of the punchiest yet this spring, which surprised me as I felt very solid and comfortable on the Artik2. The Artik2 feels very solid even on speedbar. I’m typically conservative on speed bar, but I felt very comfortable with the Artik2, plus the speed is really smooth and easy with the new pulley system. Never had even a flutter on speed. The Artik2 can turn flat, or you can crank it around steeply to stay in tight thermals, feels even more agile than the Artik. The agility was most apparent when I did asymmetric spirals, which need slightly less input than the Artik to do big ones.
I’ve shared thermals with various other 2 and 2/3 level wings and been on glide next to various wings including Aspen 2 or 3, Nova ?, Boom sport, Niviuk Peak, UP dhv2, Ozone Addict 2. It’s always hard to judge, but the Artik2 held it’s own, no dramatic differences on the short term, obviously a high performance wing.
I had only had 2 flights on the Artik2 when I took it for a day of towing and basically put it through the DHV test. I’ve done SIV clinics on a Sport 2 and Niviuk Hook, but never on a DHV 2, EN C level wing. I was a little nervous, but wanted to see how the Artik2 would respond so I did everything BIG when inducing collapses. Asymmetric collapses, off and on speed bar were benign. Holding a 50% plus either on or off speedbar required a little outside brake and mild weight shift to fly straight, a little more weight shift to fly away from the collapsed side. Big frontals on and off speed popped out easily and re-inflated without a big surge, I’m not even sure if I used brakes to check the surge. B-line stall was easy with smooth recovery to normal flight.
I did 3 full stalls, all had remarkably easy entry and exit, very well behaved under stall and easy re-inflation. I had never done a tail slide from a stall, but found it easy entry. Everyone else in the course including the instructor remarked how benign the Artik2 behaved, especially on stall, compared to other wings in the clinic including various DHV 1-2 and EN C wings. I would rate the responses as slightly more than the Hook and slightly less than the Sport 2, really mild for a higher performance wing. The day after the SIV clinic I had a personal best flight at our local site!”
“I was very impressed with the level of detail in the design and the very high standard of finish.
Finishing of the rigifoils is also very neat.
Excellent ground handling manners like the original Artik”
“Artik II is a piece of Art”
“In the air it is very precise and really fun to fly
Once you pull some wing-overs and deep dives, you realize the amazing agility it has.
Again, very easy to ground handle.
All four sizes of the ARTIK 2 (23 -25 -27 -29) have now fully passed the EN tests with the 25 and 27 scoring just a single C out of the 24 tests carried out.
I am very impressed by the flight test report. The security level of Artik 2 is really amazing for a higher performance wing.
The wing is definitely very agile, feels similar to the Artik 1 but cuts through the air more cleanly. The brake pressure is very nice and progressive. “
“It actually has Rigifoils within the mylars and not between. It uses the same size risers as the Icepeak 3, a single line on the D riser and unsheathed lines on the upper cascades. The influence of the CAD technology as used on the IP3 will I'm sure soon become clear to see.”
“Firstly, the most noticeable changes on the A2 are the thin risers with small maillons and only one line on the D riser. The upper cascades (only) are unsheathed and all the mylars have rigifoils of varying lengths attached. The wing is easy to control on the ground, much the same as the A1.
In the air, the A2 feels more solid with noticeably more internal pressure. I did some 30-40% collapses and they seem to pop out quite forcibly with a turn of no more than 90 degrees occurring - this with minimal pilot input. Big ears also pop out nicely without any brake input. B-line stalls are plain and simple but more force is required to initiate them compared to the A1.”
“The handling is precise, progressive and intuitive keeping the same superb roll as the A1 has, if not better. This makes thermalling and wingovers so much fun. But somehow, when you want the A2 to keep steady, say on a glide, the damping is noticeably better. A good combination of damping and roll all-round. The brake feedback is much the same as the A1 and potential collapses and surges are easily spotted and prevented.
The wing seems to cut through the air a lot cleaner and performance and speed are fantastic. It was a bit embarrassing looking down on a number of wings flying today that are in the same class.
Despite what will no doubt be an EN C glider right at the top of the scale in performance, out of the 24 EN tests it scored just one C, so excellent security also.”
“First impressions:
Very easy to inflate, good, short and precise handling, smooth accelerator, very good at low speeds, stable parachutal stall (manageable), long travel accelerator.”
“The artik 2 seems to consistently stay at the top of the stack and definitely has a superior glide ratio to anything flying at our site that day, not to mention it looks devilishly good. The build quality and feel of the fabric are top notch and I really like the rigifoil system implemented, saves weight and is very compact, will doing a very good job - better than mylars in my opinion. The risers are thin to put it bluntly but they would certainly only serve to benefit the wings performance while maintaining its structural integrity.
